I just recently returned from my 4th trip to the DR, and what a great time I had. I was lucky enough to catch the festival de santo domingo my last night which happens once a year where they have the big artist perform at the malecon. I wish we had more things like that here but even if we did. it would be too cold to walk down the beach. Santo domingo is my favorite city next to home. nothing compares which is why i just took my 4th and far from last trip over last week. I was fortunate to get a lot of footage this time around...

bachata

plaza de espana

merengue

Carlos, "change is the only constant in the universe". Everything in the world will evolve, and you have to evolve with the world. You cannot live in the past and hope everybody will stay in the past as well. I love Bachata, the rhythm, the music and dance. I know people will interpret the music and the dance in many different ways, and I'm grateful for that, it bring variety to the world.

Tell me something, is there only one way to dance salsa? is there only one way to dance cumbia? is there only one way to play futbol? is there only one way to eat meat? Imagine if there is only one way to do things. Where will the world be?

Please take my advice, Carlos, be grateful for everybody that is promoting Bachata, singing Bachata, teaching Bachata and dancing Bachata. Spread the love, not hate. Bachata is growing and it's thanks to all the instructors that decided to push the limits of the dance, if not, Bachata won't be near as popular as it is today.

Also, don't challenge people, invite people to collaborate together, to grow Bachata together.

Hope my advice helps you on your journey
-Juan

Sorry Carlos, I have to agree with Juan on this one. I know I can't speak for everyone else but I honestly feel that the majority of the Bachata community will agree with him also.

The truth is regardless of how passionate you are about the domincan style of bachata, which is definitely a beautiful style, without evolution and the various creative interpretations from the various talented dancers/performers you stated earlier, Bachata would not be experiencing the growth & popularity it is today. Change in anything, happens when the there is a strong demand for it from the people directly involved.

I think it's fair to say that everyone who is involved in the Bachata community in one way or another knows, understands & respects where the roots of Bachata started. However, If so many people are demanding this change, How can so many people be wrong?

To each his own. I have been to DR 15 times and I can tell you that bachata has evolved there as well. Santo Domingo, for example, especially teenagers, added fancy footwork and turns to the dance.

For Carlos, you just don't like the way bachata is evolving and that's fine. But this type of change is good, like it or not.

You also said that bachata is there to stay in DR if it didn't get evolved. You are naive in that regard. Everything evolves, it's the law of physics.
I am not even sure if Carlos is for real. He has no pic and so forth. For all we know, he's just a nobody and can't dance in NYC. Most of the people that act like this are either non-Dominican or just bitter because they don't get to share a piece of the pie.

I like where bachata is going.

not a lie, never is and was. I am also a Dominican enjoying the popularity of bachata. BTW, that explains it...not a teacher, promoter and even a performer.

It's ok to disagree, but be respectful at least, that is not very Dominican of you
"Carlos" deleted all his responses... this was such a good thread.... too bad. I guess he wasn't for real then
Hi guys,
Check out the following article, "Bachata styles and evolution".

Our friend Carlos is sharing again his thoughts in regards to the only style we should dance :)
